A POLICE officer lied about a crash with a drink driver so he could claim £1,000 compensation, a court heard.
PC Jeffrey Sidhu, 34, was on duty in an unmarked car when a driver, who was over the alcohol limit, crashed into his Ford Mondeo.
Newcastle Crown Court heard that PC Sidhu suffered whiplash injuries.
He put in a claim to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority claiming the drunk driver, John William Ridden, used his car to ram him twice.
But Toby Hedworth, prosecuting, told the court that was not the case.
PC Sidhu's deception was uncovered, he said, when the authority submitted a form to Northumbria Police as part of the investigation.
The police then discovered he was claiming criminal compensation when he had notified his bosses it was an accident.
The account he had given his superiors bore no resemblance to the one he gave when trying to claim the money.
PC Sidhu, who is stationed in Newcastle, denies attempting to obtain property by deception.
The trial continues.
