EXPERIMENTAL restrictions to close Stockton High Street to cars and lorries are introduced this weekend.
From 9.30am on Sunday, the new Traffic Regulation Order comes into force. It allows only buses and cyclists to enter the central section of High Street between 9.30am and 4.30pm seven days a week.
A 20mph speed limit will also be introduced.
The order means that, travelling southbound from the parish church, past the Town Hall, towards the Swallow Hotel, only buses and pedal cycles will have access.
Travelling northbound there is no access for vehicles except buses and pedal cycles between 6am and 6pm, apart from loading, which is restricted to 6am to 9.30am and 4.30pm to 6pm.
Taxis and vehicles loading or unloading will have access to the southern and northern loops and vehicles displaying a blue or orange badge will have access to the northern loop.
David Lynch, Stockton Borough Council's traffic management team leader, said: "The police and council will monitor and evaluate the impact of changes for both road users and pedestrians.
"Consultation will continue with public transport operators, local businesses and members of the public, before a final decision is taken on whether to make the order permanent."
The order is in place for 18 months, but will be reviewed after six months. It is expected that traffic volumes will be reduced by a third, improving the High Street for shoppers and visitors.
