THE region's fire chiefs threw their weight behind a Government initiative yesterday.
The Make Your Plan - Get Out Alive campaign is urging people to form their own fire action plan to ensure they can escape their home in the event of a blaze.
Five people died and more than 170 were injured in the Durham and Darlington area last year.
The fire brigade's chief officer, George Herbert, said: "Making a fire action plan and thinking about how you would escape from your home can increase your chances of surviving a house fire. By making a plan and installing a smoke alarm you can save yourself valuable time and escape before it is too late."
The fire action plan campaign is being supported by Argos, Axa, Currys, Ei Electronics, Help the Aged, Homebase and Woolworths.
