New sponsors Ripon Interiors picked the perfect time to back the Ripon Piscatorials Ure Championships, writes Jeff Herbert.
Attracting 113 rods, this year's match will be long remembered when for the first time two competitors shared the prestigious trophy catching 30.12.0 apiece. Ripon's Cliff Lofthouse opposite the bottom island on Foxtons field feeder fished caster over and connected with 11 chub and 2 perch but 4 lost chub were hard to bear on a day when every bite counted. Meanwhile, the other weight came from the shallow gravel glide opposite the Bell Bank at Sharow where Aireborough's Kevin Moore took the waggler and caster along the far bank run off. In the opening hour 2 chub were safely in the net then Kevin suffered two barren hours before the fish started to feed again resulting in 14 chub and 2 dace for a 'red hot' finish.
Ripon Interiors Managing Director Andrew Boddy presented the impressive prizes with the top duo sharing a cool £800.
RSPS Tek Neek Trabucco lads filled the next three places. In-form Pat Adams worked the stickfloat and bronze maggot, taking 10 chub for 25.12.0 upstream of the North Bridge.
The match produced plenty of good backing weights and others in the frame included Fred Hardcastle 17.10.0 & Steve Hodson 17.0.0.
Darlington's Rob Stubbs, who is currently enjoying a terrific run on the river grabbed the glory returning 24.1.0. Fishing peg 147 one below the speed sign, quality skimmers 13 in all accepted worm presented into midriver on a groundbait feeder packed with chopped worm and casters.
Rob Emery of Newman Scott followed 3 above the Eaglescliffe golfcourse and the same approach brought all skimmers for 22.13.0 from Dave Wood Dunelm 18.10.0 and Ron Wilkinson Newman Scott 17.5.0.
It was family affair when RSPS Tek Neek Trabucco ace Ken Close and his brother Cyril dominated the Darlington BT AA Scottish and Newcastle Trophy on the middle Tees between Coniscliffe to Croft.
Ken above Croft road bridge swapped between caster bread and wasp grub on the float trotted through the arches towards the island cover and located 11 chub at intervals to finish ahead on 21.15.0.
Meanwhile, Cyril drawing on the Hud stream at Coniscliffe was also into chub. Alongside a far bank bush he worked an Avon float and wasp grub, but had to settle for runner-up spot with 8 for 19.0.0 from Charlie Hodgson Darlington 8.2.0.
For this Sunday's Jim Batty Memorial staged on the Upper Swale between Richmond and Great Langton anglers note the draw will now be at the Crown in Brompton Village. Further details from Roy Cloke on 01325 269860.
Local Paul Bosomworth pushed the rest out of contention taming a low clear and windswept Swale to record 37.8.0 in Saturday's Northallerton and District Open. On Scruton island top stickfloat along nearside cover enticed mainly small chub up to 2.0.0 adding a sprinkling of dace and grayling.
Brotherton's Adrian Evans above Bramper corner legered wasp cake and relied on 4 chub for next best of 13.4.0.
CARP SCENE
Sensas Garbolino's John Bradshaw pulled off his first victory on the prolific Maple Lake at the Oaks Sessay on Sunday recording 52.8.0 on a tightly-packed scoresheet.
John on peg 33 fished down the track at 7 metres using cat meat on the hook netting lots of small carp from 8ozs to the pound boosted by 4 better samples all around the 4.0.0 mark.
In contrast Dean Smith went across at 13 metres picking up carp up in the water on the pellet for 48.10.0.
At the Woodlands there was a big entry of 72 for Wednesday's event and Daryl Taylor signed off his Map Elton sponsorship in grand style bagging a bumper haul of 102.3.0.
Daryl on Skylark peg 24 a good draw lifted carp up to 6.0.0 as luncheon meat and groundbait paste proved irresistible on the pole at 3 & 6 metres. It was more of the same magic paste for fellow rod Keith Kotchie who weighed in a carp net of 83.6.0 from Partridge 4.
Competitors felt a change in temperature during Saturday's match at the Woodlands when a cold North Easterly wind checked the recent trend of 'ton up' bags.
Nevertheless there was plenty of excitement at the weigh in when a 7oz split separated hotshots Daryl Taylor and Mark Coyne but Daryl netting 60.7.0
edged out his former teamate to win his first match under the Diawa Goldthorpe banner. Daryl on Skylark 7 stuck to his midweek winning formula luncheon meat and groundbait paste collecting all carp at 7 metres.
