NEARLY 250 16-year-olds will be allowed to take a practice drive in Redcar.
Already 210 youngsters have signed up to take part in Langbargh Police and Redcar and Cleveland Council's road safety day.
Only 30 places are left and organisers say all 16-year-olds, including those with special needs, can take part, and young women are especially welcome.
Organiser PC Paul McCabe explained the reasons for setting up the scheme. He said: "We want to highlight both the pitfalls and pleasures of owning and driving a car.
"We did it last year and it was a great success with more than 200 youngsters taking part and we are hoping for the same again this year. It is a brilliant opportunity to get behind the wheel of a car and also be educated about them at the same time."
The teenagers will learn about vehicle ownership, what to avoid when buying a car, advice on insurance, and hazard perception and maintenance. There are prizes to give away with a winner receiving nine driving lessons.
The event takes place at Redcar Racecourse between Tuesday, October 22 and Monday, October 28. The cost of the event is £3 and closing date for entries is Friday, October 4. Contact PC McCabe on (01642) 302068 for more details.
