A North-East city street featuring elegant Georgian architecture has been named as Britain's best.
Leading figures behind a £120m project to revitalise Newcastle city centre welcomed news that Grey Street has been voted The Most Favourite Street in Britain in a national survey.
The poll was carried out by the London-based watchdog the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment and BBC Radio 4.
One voter described being "filled with joy at the sight of the street unfolding".
The latest award will come as a major boost to the area as Newcastle and Gateshead bid to become the European City of Culture.
The Grainger Town area, which takes in Grey Street, is undergoing a huge redevelopment programme to restore its listed buildings to their former glory.
The regeneration project, due to finish next year, is funded by regional development agency One NorthEast, English Partnerships, Newcastle City Council, English Heritage and the private sector.
Over the past five years, nearly £5m has been invested.
Among the projects has been one incorporating public art into new street furniture on Grey Street.
Deputy chairman of One NorthEast John Williams said: "It is fantastic news that the splendour of Grey Street and the improvements carried out there have been recognised in this national survey in the face of stiff competition."
