PLANS to convert a theatre into a nightclub have met with a mixed reception from councillors.
Members of Stockton Borough Council's planning committee met yesterday to discuss plans by Northern Leisure to turn the former Globe Theatre, in Stockton High Street, into a nightspot.
The council has received numerous objections from local residents concerned about the loss of a theatre and also from Cleveland Police who fear that another late night bar would cause increased competition, with venues introducing lower prices to entice customers.
Speaking at the meeting, Councillor Eileen Craggs said: "How can we have a culture if we are letting go of this unique theatre. We have not investigated how the Lottery or Northern Arts could help. We are a cultural desert. We should not let this building go as a nightclub."
Her views were echoed by Councillor Barry Bellerby who said that Stockton High Street had become a shadow of its former self.
Northern Leisure has said that the building, which has stood empty for the past eight years, would also house a restaurant and bar, with space for a dance and live performance area.
The committee agreed to defer its decision until a later date.
