RAILTRACK has finally admitted responsibility for a rail bridge in Darlington branded "dangerous" by drivers.
The low bridge in Cleveland Street, Albert Hill, Darlington, had warning reflectors placed too high.
In June, just weeks after The Northern Echo revealed the danger, a lorry ploughed into the bridge and caused disruption to the East Coast Main Line. No one was injured in the incident.
At the time of the crash, Railtrack said the reflectors had been placed on the bridge by the council.
But a spokeswoman last night said it was workers from Railtrack who had put the signs on the bridge, and they had now been moved into the correct position.
John Singh, proprietor of Abba Taxis in Darlington, said the bridge had been a potential death trap when the reflectors were installed on it in May.
And just weeks later the East Coast Main Line was closed while safety experts checked the bridge was secure after the flat-backed HGV became wedged underneath it.
