AN artist is scouring County Durham's mining villages for residents with artistic flair to take on an arts project.

Housewife Barbara Knapper taught herself to paint while recovering from an operation in 1999 and after taking part in two art exhibitions she is now preparing for the first solo showing of her work.

Now, Mrs Knapper, from Kelloe, near Durham, is trying to find other amateur artists like herself to work towards an art exhibition at the end of the year.

She has secured £495 of Millennium Awards money for her venture, to cover participants' costs.

Her next exhibition takes place at Bowburn Library from October 5 to October 22.

She can be contacted on 0191-377 3626.
