TWO new clubs for young people have been started in an east Durham town.
The venues bring with them the assurance that "at last youngsters living in the Peterlee area will have somewhere to go on a Friday night''.
Both clubs are the idea of a young persons steering group, which includes youngsters from the Durham County Investing in Children Initiative.
They discussed the ideas with representatives from Peterlee Leisure Centre, Peterlee Police, and youth workers.
The clubs are called Club Idol for young people aged between 12 and 14, and Club Envy, which will cater for teenagers aged between 15 and 17.
Both will meet on a fortnightly basis at Peterlee Leisure Centre, where nights of disco music will be held and a caf bar will serve soft drinks and snacks.
Admittance to the clubs will be by membership only and will cost £2.50 for a year's membership and £1.50 admittance.
Introductory nights for each club are part of attempts to encourage young people to come along and see if they would like to join.
The first of the nights was held on Friday last week when Club Envy met between 7.30pm and 10.30pm. Club Idol will start on Friday this week between 7pm to 9pm.
Application forms for both clubs will be available on the night or from Peterlee Leisure Centre.
