COMPETITION judges got a lot more than they bargained for when they asked schoolchildren on Teesside to show their creative skills.
The children sent more than 1,000 entries to the writing and drawing contest to mark explorer Captain James Cook's birthday next month.
Vida Booth, education officer at the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum, in Middlesbrough's Stewart Park, said: "The enthusiasm around the competition has been truly overwhelming, with some primary schools sending their entire school to the museum to get the facts before returning entries from every year group.
"Huge thanks must go to those who took part.''
The competition was a joint venture between the Middlesbrough Council museum and teaching supply agency Supply Desk.
Celebrations commemorating the 274th anniversary of the explorer's birthday will take place from October 18 to October 27, when the prizes for the competition will be awarded.
