PIGEON fanciers from south Durham will take part in an open race this week, competing for a £250 first prize.
Last year, 150 birds competed in the race, organised by Middlestone Moor Homing Society. It is hoped that number will be smashed this week.
Marking and clock setting will take place at Middlestone Moor Working Men's Club, near Spennymoor, on Thursday, from 5pm to 9pm, for the flight from Ashford in Kent on Saturday.
Cash prizes will go to the first four birds to return home, thanks to sponsorship from Electrolux Home Products.
