A derelict farm in a small, Romanian town is to benefit from the efforts of a university team of runners.
Four staff and two students from Newcastle University's School of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development will be running in the Bupa Great North Run on Sunday, October 6. They aim to raise £1,500 for 500 free-range chickens and six months of feed for Siret Farm.
Birmingham charity Our New Life bought the farm two years ago to provide work and training for young people leaving Romanian orphanages.
The school is managing the farm for the charity, which asked the university for help.
The running team is: head of school Dr Alan Younger, lecturer Dr Andrew Beard, research associate Dr Jonathan Guy, secretary Wilma Lister and third-year students Ed Rowbottom, Matthew Evans and Lisa Thomas.
