DAVID BECKHAM, the Queen and pop idol Will Young are all to share a new home at a North Yorkshire castle.
All three have a place in the hearts and minds of youngsters from Richmond and have been chosen as icons of 2002 who deserve a place in an English Heritage history draw at the town's Norman ruin.
A World Cup sticker of David Beckham, a coin produced to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee and a Will Young CD are among the artefacts the children from Richmond Methodist Primary School wanted to see set aside for posterity.
Other drawers which chart Richmond through the ages inside the castle's exhibition area contain an 11th Century cloak pin and a Victorian penny.
Castle custodian, Lorraine Cooper, said: "This is a great way to get schoolchildren involved and make them feel part of the town's history.
"The display is proving a big hit with tourists, who pull out any of five drawers to view relics spanning 200 years."
Teacher Stephen Simper said youngsters in years five and six were already involved in a local study topic and visited the castle to trace its roots and those of the town that grew up around it.
"The people at the castle asked if the children would contribute to the 2002 drawer and they were only too eager to help," he said.
