CAMPAIGNERS trying to save a swimming pool have had a boost, thanks to their community's Venture Scout group.

The Scouts raised £250 with a 120-mile fundraising trek across the Pennines, to back a campaign to rebuild Guisborough swimming pool.

The future of the pool is uncertain as leisure facilities are reviewed in east Cleveland.

Campaigners in Redcar believe a pool should be built there and it is not clear if funds would be available to build that and rebuild the ageing Guisborough baths.

Three of the Venture Scouts, Christopher Gell, David Taylor and Gareth Clay, met their MP and chairman of the swimming pool steering group, Dr Ashok Kumar, to hand over the cash.

Dr Kumar said: "The Scouts endured a real test and have raised a good deal of cash to help the campaign, a campaign that is also being backed by the local Market Towns Initiative who will soon be organising a feasibility study into the pool's replacement.

"Their exertions show that local people care about their swimming pool, and are prepared to go to great lengths to demonstrate how much this facility is valued by both the Guisborough and the wider East Cleveland community."
