AN exhibition of photographs from a new local history book proved a big success.

Pictures from Durham City Remembered 1935 to 1960, by Gilesgate-based archivist Michael Richardson, were displayed at Durham City Baptist Church.

The event was organised by Gilesgate and Pelaw branch of the Labour Party.

Local councillors were on hand to discuss city issues and Mayor Eileen Rochford and her consort Barry Grimes performed the opening.

Mr Richardson said: "One old chap spotted his mother at a 1946 Victory tea held in Durham Indoor Market.
