LONG-awaited repairs to one of Richmond's most famous landmarks are finally expected to start in the next few weeks.
A specialist company, Castle Masonry, will carry out the restoration work on the obelisk in the town's market place.
The project will begin with the rebuilding of the top section, some stone replacement and general repair work to the structure.
The restoration programme of the monument is being financed by a £50,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, £30,000 from the district council and £6,000 from the town council.
District council leader Blackie said: "The initial work will be carried out off-site as the stone will have to be specially prepared.
"Once the work starts in Richmond, it will be confined to the monument itself, so it should not affect nearby parking or trade."
The obelisk was created by local stonemason Robert Plummer in 1771 to replace a medieval market cross, which once stood on the site.
The restoration programme is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
