A woman was dragged along the ground by a mugger as she struggled to keep hold of her bag.
Detectives said the 51-year-old woman let go of the bag a couple of metres into the roadway in Preen Drive, Middlesbrough.
The badly shaken woman received hospital treatment for a wrist injury and cuts and bruising.
She had been carrying £100 in cash in her bag, credit cards and a mobile phone. Her assailant is described as being of Asian or ethnic appearance, about 5ft 9in and aged between 18 and 25 years.
He was dressed all in black and wore a dark baseball cap when he struck at 10pm on Tuesday.
Preen Drive runs off the A1130 Mandale Road, in Acklam, Middlesbrough. Anyone with information about the robbery is urged to contact Cleveland Police on (01642) 303126 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
