A RETIRED headteacher will face one of the biggest challenges yet in his running battle with cancer.
On Sunday, October 6 David Snell will take part in the Great North Run to raise money for the charity that has supported him and his family.
Last year, Mr Snell, who is well known in his home town of Shildon as a residents' association member and former headteacher at what was Henknowle Primary School, underwent treatment for bowel cancer. He was recently diagnosed with secondary liver cancer.
But, rather than set him back, his fight against the disease has spurred him to compete in the race and gather sponsor money for the Salvation Army.
He said: "I always thought it would be exciting to take part in this great event. My course of chemotherapy ended just as it was time to apply for entry into the run this year. This was the incentive I needed to re-gain some of my fitness."
His wife, Joyce, said: "He wanted to do something for the Salvation Army in Shildon, which we are both volunteers for, as a way of saying thank you for all the local support he has had.
"David has a positive attitude. I know he won't sit back and let this take over his life. That's why he still intends going on the run."
