FAMILIES in a Weardale village are pleading with the council to support plans to open a children's play area.
Residents of Stanhope hope to raise enough money to replace a playground which was closed and the equipment dismantled early this year.
They are calling on Wear Valley District Council to cover annual maintenance and insurance costs of the equipment they plan to buy and install near homes in Ashcroft.
An appeal committee has been launched to raise the profile of the campaign and gather funds to pay for the development.
Councillor Harry Irwin, a member of the comittee and vice-chairman of Stanhope Parish Council, said: "Play areas are vital and the council should be looking to support us wholeheartedly. They are important to youngsters' development, give them somewhere to socialise and get them out in the fresh air.
"The original equipment should have been maintained and replaced. People in Stanhope feel very strongly about how vital it is to replace it now."
Council officers advised against the proposal, which was considered by the community services committee this week.
They said the district has a high number of play areas for the population, including one less than 500 metres from the proposed site, which was also predominantly funded by residents.
Councillors voted to make a site visit.
Head of community and cultural services Max Coleby said: "The council is very sympathetic towards the request and members are very mindful of their views. But Wear Valley does have significantly more play areas than most similar authorities and it is difficult and costly to keep on top of safety at these sites.
"The existing area in Stanhope is well equipped and close by."
Coun Irwin said: "Ashcroft is a perfect place for a play area, regardless of how near the other play area is. It has been a playing field for years and should remain so. It is overlooked by houses, so parents feel it is safe, and to get to the other site most children have to cross the busy A689.
