East Stanley WI: The president Anne Stayman welcomed members to the September meeting after the summer break.
Cissie Carr and Elsie Marshall were thanked for the flowers that were sent to Jean Wright. Lilly Middleton read her favourite verse, To Be Content. Everyone had enjoyed the August outing to Preston Park, Redcar and on to a wonderful tea at Peterlee WI, which was much appreciated. Final arrangements were made for the outing to Alnwick Castle Gardens and suggestions were made for the Christmas meal.
The competition, a pretty headscarf, was won by Laura Allan with Una Swan second. Laura Allan also won the raffle.
We were then entertained by Brian and Pauline with a medley of songs to suit all tastes and Brian's jokes. This brightened up a horribly dull and foggy night and sent us home in good spirits after a welcome cup of tea and biscuits. They were warmly thanked by Audrey Wallace.
The next meeting on Monday, October 14, will be a Broth Supper with entertainment from magician Ward Allen.
South Moor: Mrs Moore welcomed members to the September meeting after the summer break and sick members were remembered. Members had enjoyed their outing to Ripon and Skipton - a real summer's day.
The reading was given by Joyce Wright and Mrs Pearson dealt with the business and correspondence. Names were taken for Christmas lunch at the Harperley Hotel on December 3. Mrs George read the financial report.
Our speaker, Mrs Nicholson, gave a talk, How it works, from her own experience and a very warm vote of thanks was given by Mrs Pearson.
The competition, a tea apron, was judged by Mrs Galaway. The winner was Mrs Nicholson, with Mrs Soulsby second and Mrs Pearson third. The raffle was given by Mrs Killeen and was won by Mrs Soulsby. The evening ended with a welcome cup of tea and refreshments.
Tantobie WI: The August meeting was a very successful pie and peas supper and bring and buy sale. Members had enjoyed a visit to Whitby at the end of August.
The September meeting was the Harvest Festival followed by a magnificent display by Ann Claire of a door hanging from Escomb Church. The competition of a tapestry was won by Mrs Smith, Mrs Green and Mrs J. Wallace. The raffle was won by Mrs Stacey.
The next meeting is at 6.30pm, on October 21, in the Communal Room, when the talk will be on Beamish Museum.
