DAVID BECKHAM, the Queen and pop idol Will Young have all been chosen as icons of 2002 and will now take their place in an English Heritage 'history drawer' at Richmond Castle.
A World Cup sticker of David Beckham, a coin produced to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee and a Will Young CD are among the artefacts the children from Richmond Methodist Primary School wanted to see set aside for posterity.
Other drawers that chart Richmond through the ages contain an eleventh century cloak pin and an old Victorian penny.
Castle custodian Lorraine Cooper said: "This is a great way to get school children involved and make them feel part of the town's history.
"The display is proving a big hit with tourists, who simply pull out any of five drawers to view relics spanning 200 years."
