A HEADTEACHER is to take part in the Great North Run as part of his retirement year.
Peter Smith, headteacher of Whinstone Primary School, Ingleby Barwick, is retiring after 37 years of teaching, 25 years of which were spent as a headteacher.
He decided to join the run to raise money for the Arthritis Research Campaign in honour of one of his pupils.
Emma Doree, nine, has suffered from severe juvenile idiopathic rheumatoid arthritis since she was four, and has attended Whinstone since nursery.
Mr Smith said he had never met such a brave, courageous and smiling pupil as Emma.
He said: "It is both a pleasure and a privilege to raise money for the charity, which in turn will help in Emma's treatment."
Anyone wishing to sponsor Mr Smith in his run on Sunday is asked to contact Marion Bell on (01207) 509976.
