DETECTIVES in Newton Aycliffe have issued a description of a car seen at two homes where distraction burglaries occurred yesterday.
The red Rover 620, four-door saloon, registration OIJ 2476, was seen in the Elm Road area of Shildon, where thieves posing as water company officials struck shortly before 1.30pm.
Two men called at the home of an elderly woman and gained entry by pretending to need to check the water system. While the woman was in the kitchen with one of the men, the other searched the premises.
It is thought the same men visited the home of an elderly woman in Newton Aycliffe shortly before noon. Police are unable to give details of what was taken.
Detective Constable Dave Robinson, of Newton Aycliffe CID, said: "These people are callously targeting elderly women and we would urge anyone who sees this vehicle to contact police immediately."
