YOUNGSTERS from Newton Aycliffe are taking part in the Great North Run to raise money for their school.
Thirty youngsters from Stephenson Way Primary School will be competing in the 4km BUPA Junior Great North Run in Gateshead and Newcastle on Saturday.
George Wimpey City, a division of George Wimpey, one the UK's largest house builders, has donated £300 to the school to help cover entry fees for the children and has also donated T-shirts for all of the runners.
This is the third year the school has taken part in the race, and over the years its runners have raised hundreds of pounds for The Friends of Stephenson Way Primary School.
The organisation holds several fundraising events a year to raise money for equipment and other items which are not included in the school budget.
It has already provided items such as a wooden train for the infant playground, picnic tables and benches for the junior playground and has also bought equipment for the football, netball and gym clubs at the school.
Debbie Connell, a teaching assistant at the school and secretary of the Friends, said: "We attempt to split the money we raise throughout the school so that everyone can benefit from it. We hope to raise £500 this year."
This is the first year infant school age children have been able to take part in the run, and Stephenson Way will be represented by children aged between five and 13-years-old. Five adults will also be running with the children.
Mrs Connell said: "We would like to say a huge thank you to George Wimpey City for all the help the company has given us."
