Michael Bruton (Bannatyne's, Durham) impressed in taking his first ever title with the boys U10 honours at the tournament staged at Nunthorpe SC recently.

He defeated Norton's Mark Conway in the final 9-4 9-6 9-6 after knocking out Kyle Garbutt (Guisborough) in the last four. He lost to Lee Skinner (Aycliffe) in the U17 semi-finals but bounced back after that defeat to come good in the higher age group.

Julia Vasey added to her U17 title with the U19 this time - a second success for the Durham club. All other titles went to players either from South Durham or Cleveland, Skinner, the county's 2001-2 player of the year lost eight points only in winning the U17 with Richard Collins of the host club the runner-up. Claire Lindsay (Nunthorpe) took the girls honours in that age group beating Jennifer Jacques in the final.

Durham and Cleveland County Junior Closed championships

Adam Barraclough already a county senior player, took the 18 and under boys single title at the recent closed tournament in Sunderland. His final victim, Iain Atkinson, a fellow Wearsider, took the 16 and under.

He beat Nunthorpe's Stephen Preston by 7-6 6-7 6-4 in the match of the tournament, but went down in straight sets to Barraclough.

Vicky Jones (Boldon) beat Claire Smith for the girls 18 and under honours, the latter Tennis World player from Hutton Rudby. Another Teessider Laura Bailey was victorious in the 16s.
