WHEN it comes to growing prize-winning leeks keen Weardale gardeners David and Gillian Pattinson believe in keeping it in the family.
That is why they picked up the first two prizes in the annual show held at the Village Hall, Westgate, which attracted entries from 17 growers.
David, a team leader with Northumbrian Water at Burnhope reservoir, weighed in with a pair of leeks measuring 190.45 cubic inches, and Gillian was not far behind with her entry at 168.2 cubic inches. In third place was Gordon Scott with 136.42 cubic inches.
Other prize winners were: Flowers and vegetables, Frank Walton, and baking, Pearl Featherstone.
