THE dream of creating a multi-purpose centre for deaf people in County Durham took a step forward as supporters boosted funds with a sponsored walk.
Eight walkers took part in a ten-mile trek from the High Force Hotel, in Teesdale, and another 50 took part in two three-mile walks in the area.
The event, last weekend, included a raffle and raised £1,300 to go towards the centre which members of County Durham Equal Access Forum (Co.deaf) are hoping to build to support all aspects of the deaf community.
Suzie Maine, from Co.deaf, said: "The raison d'etre of Co.deaf is to establish a resource centre, which with the co-operation of statutory services, will become the focal point for the provision of services.
"It will cater specifically for the social, educational, communicative, legal, medical and welfare needs and rights of deaf people."
A site for the centre has yet to be established, but it is hoped it will be central for easy access for everyone living in the County Durham area.
Co.deaf's committee is made up of 12 professionals who are all deaf. Mrs Maine said: "We are committed to using our experience and professional expertise to help ensure that all deaf people in County Durham are able to enjoy the equality of access taken for granted by their hearing peers."
The organiser of the walk, Fiona Greensit, who is also deaf, said: "Everyone applauded when we proudly announced the total approximately raised.
"I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to the sponsored walk and made this day a great success.''
