A NURSE is putting on her running shoes in memory of a family friend who launched a hospice fundraising campaign.
Joy McCulloch, who works at Darlington Memorial Hospital, is taking part in the Great North Run in memory of Rob Niven, who recently died of cancer.
All the money raised will go to St Teresa's Hospice campaign to open a full-time care unit in Darlington.
The campaign, which needs to raise £250,000, was launched by Mr Niven days before he died.
At present, the hospice can offer only day-care or help for patients at home, but the six- bed unit would provide full-time care for people in Darlington and the surrounding area.
Hospice director Jane Bradshaw said: "Running a half marathon represents a huge commitment and challenge and we are delighted that Joy has decided to help us.
"Rob was a great friend of us all and we are so pleased that many people who knew him are choosing to remember him by helping St Teresa's Hospice.
"I hope that Joy's enthusiasm will encourage others to follow her example and run for the hospice in next year's event."
So far, the campaign has raised £33,500. The latest donations have come from Wharton Construction and Bussey and Armstrong Homes, which have both pledged £100-a- month towards the appeal.
