MORE than £1m has been spent on caring for people with life-limiting illnesses by Butterwick Hospice Care.
The organisation incorporates the Butterwick Hospice and Children's Hospice in Stockton and the Butterwick Hospice in Bishop Auckland.
In its annual review for 2001 to 2002 a total of £1,370,025 in funds was spent on caring for patients.
The care group has been able to raise money through the generosity of donors, fundraising events, legacies and grants. In its financial year £1,226,392 was raised from donations and events, £291,048 from Butterwick lotteries and £144,268 from its shops and sale of merchandise.
The hospice at home service, which covers Sedgefield and Durham Dales, has recently submitted bids to the New Opportunities Fund.
If the bid is successful the care group hopes to expand its service further, in collaboration with Primary Care Trusts and Marie Curie.
Peter F Riley, chairman of Butterwick Hospice Care, offered thanks to the "very caring public of the region"
