THE £5.5m dream of building a replacement for St Catherine's Hospice, at Scarborough, has moved a step nearer reality with a turf-cutting ceremony.

The Mayor of Scarborough, Councillor Sheila Kettlewell, led the civic party at the event - but Coronation Street star Malcolm Hebden, who plays the soap's Norris Cole, had to pull out due to filming commitments.

The hospice's longest-serving nurse, Cathy Arnott, stepped into the breach.

Leaders of Scarborough Borough Council and members of the local business community, joined health service staff at the ceremony at High Farm, Throxenby.

The site is a mile from the present hospice on Scalby Road, which trustees say is too small for their current needs. The new facility will have 20 beds and a wide range of modern facilities for patients and their families.
