A CELEBRATION of the humble apple will be taking place in Chester-le-Street.
To mark National Apple Day, Durham Wildlife Trust is organising a celebration of the common fruit to highlight its benefit for wildlife.
The event takes place in the wildlife garden at Strikes Lambton Garden Centre, in Bournmoor, near Chester-le-Street, between 11.30am and 3.30pm on Sunday, October 20.
Visitors will be able to try different kinds of apple juice, buy apple pie and cream or choose from a wide variety of fruit trees that will be on sale.
They can also help plant the first fruit tree in the wildlife garden's Golden Jubilee mini-orchard. The trust hopes to finish planting the orchard by the end of November and is currently looking for people to sponsor the trees.
Durham Wildlife Trust's information cabin is open each weekend in the garden, where volunteers are on hand to offer advice on wildlife-friendly gardening methods.
