WORLD leaders and an Hollywood actor have given their backing to a North-East mayor's charity fundraising efforts.
Former US president Bill Clinton and British Prime Minister Tony Blair signed up to a charity idea pioneered by the Mayor of Sedgefield, Councillor David Newell, when he met them at last week's Labour Party conference in Blackpool.
The politicians agreed to autograph a US flag, which will be auctioned to raise money for Coun Newell's mayor's charity fund.
Not one to miss an opportunity, Coun Newell also signed up Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey to the fundraising effort.
The star of American Beauty was accompanying Mr Clinton during his visit to England.
The Secretary of State for Defence, Geoff Hoon - who has supported Coun Newell in past fundraising activities - was also keen to help and added his name to the flag.
Coun Newell said: "Meeting Bill Clinton was an inspiring experience. Although not in office, he is still dedicated to peace, prosperity and eradicating poverty throughout the world."
He said: "The Prime Minister was very helpful in getting the signatures on the flag, helping a local charity, the Pioneering Care Partnership in Newton Aycliffe and the national charity St Dunstan's."
The flag will be auctioned at a forthcoming charity event.
Anyone who would like to make a formal bid for the flag can do so by writing to the mayor at the Sedgefield Borough Council offices in Green Lane, Spennymoor.
