A NEW scheme aims to stop pensioners in Gateshead becoming crime victims by tidying up their gardens.
The British Gas Help the Aged Partnership and Anchor Staying Put, Gateshead, have joined forces to reduce the number of older people being preyed on by bogus callers.
The partnership's £5,000 grant to Anchor Staying Put, Gateshead, will enable the project to undertake gardening, including clearing paths, mowing and weeding.
The aim is to stop overgrown or untidy gardens alerting thieves to the fact that they are owned by vulnerable pensioners.
Ron Day, of Anchor Staying Put, Gateshead, said: "Gardens are in constant view, so it is essential they are adequately maintained."
