THE future of a coal yard serving a remote area of North Yorkshire may not go up in smoke, if councillors approve a bid for a new base.
Ryedale District Council's planners have been told David Welford's business is vital to the villages of Wrelton, Cropton, Aislaby and Middleton.
His application to relocate to an agricultural shed in Cliff Lane, Wrelton, was originally listed for refusal on the grounds it could prove a blot on the landscape.
However, the council's planning committee will visit the site before making a decision.
Mr Welford currently uses a disused quarry on the nearby Cropton Lane as a base, but is having to move as the owner needs the land.
Cropton Parish Council has objected to his proposals as it fears Cliff Lane would not be able to cope with extra traffic.
Ian Reed, of Low Coppice Farm, Wrelton, said: "The noise and disturbance would have an impact on the peaceable enjoyment of our home."
