PLANS to add to development on the banks of the River Tyne were unveiled yesterday.
North-East developer Yuill Group has submitted plans to build the South Shore One development at Gateshead Quayside, down river from the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.
Proposals include two floors of office space, with 76 apartments set among six-and-a-half floors of accommodation above. The design also incorporates a top floor of five penthouse apartments.
The Yuill Group is confident that, once given the go-ahead, the development could be completed before 2008, in time for an influx of visitors to Tyneside - if the joint Gateshead-Newcastle capital of culture bid is successful.
The plan, involving a £20m investment by the group, will replace outdated industrial buildings on the Ingersoll-Rand (IR) site in South Shore Road.
The site is home to three IR companies - Locking Systems, Laidlaw and Hussman - which will relocate to modern accommodation elsewhere in Gateshead.
A full planning application was lodged with Gateshead Council yesterday.
Yuill Group chairman Phillip Yuill said: "This stunning development has been designed to complement the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, Sage Gateshead music centre and complete the setting of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.
"What's more, South Shore One fulfils national and regional planning guidelines so enthusiastically promoted by Government. It represents a perfect example of a sustainable, mixed use development on a brownfield site."
