Barnard Castle Glaxo are enjoying a new lease of life in the Wearside League after going a year without playing.
They were members of the Auckland and District League for a season before calling it a day but the lure of the game persuaded them to reform the side.
"I have been secretary since 1990 and was just pleased that the club decided to give it another go. We felt that if we were to attract good players we had to play at the highest standard possible and were over the moon when our application to join the Wearside League was accepted," said Kevin Greaves.
The club boasts excellent facilities with first-class changing accommodation and two pitches to accommodate three sides - an over-40s team and a Sunday morning side in addition to the Wearside League outfit.
"We are making the best use of the ground and really pleased to be meeting sides from throughout the region and as far afield as Whitehaven and Windscale. "It is a new experience for us and so far we have not done too badly in our first year. Our aim is to consolidate and hopefully go on from there but obviously it will take time," Greaves added.
Terry Laffey, who has played in the Albany Northern League and formerly managed Evenwood, is manager and Jon Hall his assistant. Jon has played in goal recently, deputising for regular stopper Paul Hedley, who is injured.
"The pair are doing a good job for us, using their experience and pulling power and one or two of the players brought in have been with ANL clubs. We have a few points in the bag and feel we will do OK in our initial season."
After playing in the Wensleydale League, Glaxo moved into the Darlington and District League and won the title on three occasions before playing just one year in the Auckland and District League.
Doug Rutherford is chairman with Geoff Wall his deputy. John Charlton fills the Treasurer's role and Greaves makes up the four-man list of officials who are determined to take full advantage of their new opportunity following the re-formation of the team earlier in the year.
