DIVISION Two sides Postchaise and Binchester Hotel both claimed First Division scalps in the B&A Trophy last week.

Postchaise recorded a 4-1 win over Binchester Social Club, while Binchester Hotel turned Salvins over in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

John Paul Greaves bundled Postchaise's first over the line to give them a 1-0 lead before Phil Dowd grabbed the second from the spot.

Darren Spark pulled one back for Binchester early in the second half, but Scott Stainsby and Dowd made sure of the victory.

"I think we were fairly comfortable winners," said scorer and Postchaise Secretary Stainsby. "Although the scoreline might have flattered us a bit. It was a good game, but we were strong at the back and I think that proved to be the decider between the two sides."

Binchester Secretary Steve Sutton was disappointed with his side's performance. "We haven't been playing well for a while now," he said. "We just can't seem to turn the same 11 out for two consecutive games, with two or three lads letting us down almost every week."

Binchester Hotel, meanwhile, are enjoying a far better season than last term - and they eventually joined Postchaise in the second round after drawing 4-4 with Salvins after extra-time, winning the shoot-out 3-1.

Michael Simmons put them 1-0 up, but Kenny Dufferwell equalised. Steve Clarke made it 2-1 to Binny, but Dufferwell grabbed his second to draw level again. Binchester then went 3-2 up when Clarke scored his second, but Gary Summerson scored another equaliser to force extra-time. Simmons grabbed his second to put Binchester in front before Glynn Troop grabbed yet another Salvins leveller to set-up the nail-biting shoot-out.

Elsewhere, Brandon beat Two Blues 4-0 thanks to goals by Phillip Winter (2), Kevin Williams and Lee Nyland. "Very pleased with the win," enthused manager Kevin Williams. "We played well and I think we are starting to get the breaks now. We're playing a lot better this season but we haven't been getting a lot of luck - hopefully that's starting to turn in our favour now."

Lakeside beat Cumby Arms 8-3 with goals by Dave Welsh (3), Andy Clay (2), Morgan Fielding, Sean Bent and Martin Walker.

Thorns beat Beehive 4-1 with goals by Lee Atkinson (2), Andrew Richardson and Mark Russell. Kevin Strange scored for Beehive.

Stuart Whigham, Michael Davison and Richard Pallister scored for Eldon Lane to give their side a 3-1 victory over Victoria, Martin Longthorne grabbing Vic's goal, while Horndale beat neighbours and rivals North Briton 6-3. Adrian Gough (4), Wayne Pratt and Tony Stebbings scored for Horndale, with David Teddar (2) and Dean Harcus netting for the Brit.

In Division One, table-toppers Newton Aycliffe drew 0-0 with fellow title-chasers Old Shildon. The two sides both had bies in the B&A Trophy. In Division Two Masons United beat Boot & Shoe 2-1 - they also had bies last week, along with Tudhoe Utd, Grand and Green Tree. Meanwhile, three cup draws were made at the League's October meeting last week.
