The best ever yet! That was the Middlesbrough AC Mac Hopson Memorial when three venue records crashed and the Middle Swale best rose to 87.0.0 and even those not on chub caught dace roach and gudgeon.
Dunelm's Steve Gillham made a sensational debut on the Ainderby shallows. In overcast conditions the chub fed all match and using a small loafer float bulk shotted and bronze maggot Steve extracted 36 chub for a history-making bag. Oldham's Fred Prudham made his long journey worthwhile catching a stunning 64.6.0 from Allerthorpe shallows at Maunby. Incredibly half way through the match he was still waiting for his first chub but patience paid off netting 28 samples along with a grayling on waggler and caster tight to far bank willows Baldersby produced the biggest surprise when new RSPS Tek Neek Trabucco signing Gerry Bowes returned 46-7-0 consisting of 11 big chub on bomb and caster.
The North East Division of the Winter League got underway on a low clear Wear. First blood went to Shimano Quaker Match Group (formerly Darlington Angling Centre) who left arch rivals and reigning champions Newman Scott Blue 12 points adrift tying with Cleveland Angling Centre. Individually Dave Harris of CAC just edged in front weighing in 18.14.8. On peg 12 above Shincliffe Hall stickfloat and double caster tempted 5 good chub around the 3.0.0 mark supplemented by dace and grayling. 'In form' Ken Close of RSPS Tek Neek Trabucco 3 swims above the winner floatfished meat and wasp grub to coax out a dozen smaller chub from the shallow glide for 18.1.0

Ripon's first fixture on the Norton Conyers stretch of the Ure resulted in a sell out and there was plenty of action as the statistics read 26 double figured nets with 12 over the 20.0.0 mark despite a low clear venue.
Turners Tackle ace Graham Skirrey leapfrogged into top slot when 15 chub for 42.11.0 came in a hectic 90 mins at the end of the match. Below the old quarry on peg 11, waggler approach with caster maggot and wasp grub put the result beyond doubt. Local Sammy Braithwaite followed from a peg at the top of the Dales field at Nunwick. Feeder with white maggot and caster encouraged 10 quality chub backed by dace and grayling for 28.12.0. Best of the rest: Dougie Forkin 26.6.0; Steve Pearson 25.10.0.
A very busy Sunday on the match circuit kept the attendance down for the NYSD Federation Open but as ever the Over Dinsdale length of the Tees delivered with 13 double figured bags.
Darlington man Paul Breeze led the way with a mainly super roach bag of 34.1.0.
Highlight for runner up Malcolm Gardiner of Newcastle came when he netted several huge perch upto 3.0.0 on waggler fished caster.
In the Thornaby AA Anglers Open Cup on the middle reaches of the Tees, Darlington's Mark Burgess needed two fish for a runaway victory. Mark in the ringfield at Hurworth fed bunches of lobworm on the bomb and much to his surprise pulled out two pike - biggest 10.0.0 to take the scales to 17.6.0 from fellow rod Maurice Mudd whose chub dace and chublet net weighed in a level 10.0.0.
Meanwhile on the River Ouse at Poppleton the turnout was disappointing but a staggering 57.10.0 won the York & District AA John Smith's Hospital Cup. Stuart Wilson of Marsh Tackle spent a couple of hours on the slider catching 12.0.0 of roach and perch on the caster before a bream came along and quickly prompted a change to the feeder, tempting another nine.

CARP SCENE
At the Woodlands during Saturday's 90 pegger split between five of the match lakes Elton Tackle's Keith Fryatt enjoyed some great sport weighing in 4 double figured carp (best a mirror of 12.0.0) making up half of his bag of 84.12.0 during an exciting match. Keith on Partridge 4 went out to 3 & 7 metres as winds hampered longpole presentation. Fishing along the boards and out to 7 metres on the paste he despatched 17 carp in all into the keepnet.
It was non-stop action as small carp fed steadily for Map Elton's Mark Coyne. On Skylark's corner peg 18 he opted for the pellet working in front at 7 metres and against the boards to finish an arm aching session with 72.15.0 followed by Dave Pimlott of Elton Tackle with 66.4.0.
