DIETICIANS are offering expert advice to sufferers of coeliac disease at a special fair tomorrow.
One person in 1,000 is diagnosed with the disease - which means they are unable to tolerate gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats, or any products containing these - but experts believe the true figure is much higher.
More than 200 people are registered sufferers in North Durham area alone.
If untreated, symptoms include weight loss, anaemia, diarrhoea and brittle bone disease.
Doctors specialising in the condition will be on hand to answer questions, while food manufacturers with new products and information will be displaying their wares.
Samples of gluton-free products will be available to buy and demonstrations of cookery techniques will be given.
