AN MP says plans to opencast more than 140 acres of farmland will blight the area for many years.

Durham City MP Gerry Steinberg has re-stated his backing for residents in the Bowburn area who are fighting proposals by the Eco Energy Group to mine in fields between Bowburn, Coxhoe and Old Quarrington.

Durham County Council has refused planning permission but the group has appealed and a public inquiry will be held next week.

Mr Steinberg said: "My opposition is based entirely on the dreadful situation that residents will be forced to tolerate and the devastation that inevitably accompanies opencast coal extraction.

"Anyone who has experienced the effects of opencast mining is aware of the terrible impact this development poses.

"If allowed, the proposal would negatively affect every aspect of the area, significantly spoiling the environment, the quality of life of residents and irreparably damaging the fabric and morale of the local community.''

The consortium proposes removing 750,000 tonnes of coal over three-and-a-half years, before restoring the site for a hotel, fast food restaurant, pub and light industrial development.

Mr Steinberg said the planned after-use was "unacceptable in its own right as it would significantly and detrimentally change the character of the area if permitted.''

He added that he was urging that the appeal be dismised.
