A NEW maritime archaeology centre is to open in Hartlepool this weekend.

Hartlepool Borough Council's arts and museums service is staging a range of activities at Sir William Gray House in Clarence Road today and Sunday to coincide with National Family Learning Weekend.

The centre is a pilot project that aims to offer people hands-on experience of everyday archaeological tasks.

Naomi Beeley, learning and access officer, said: "We have created a large sandpit along one wall of the centre and we will be putting some bits of shipwrecks in it to give people experience of carrying out an excavation.

"We will also have an 18th Century cannon at the event and there will be a chance to learn how to work out its age."

There will also be a range of display stands from local societies, the Sea Cadets Sea Band will be performing and there will be various quizzes and trails, along with art and craft activities.

The events will run from 10.30am to 3.30pm on both days .
