STEVE McClaren is contemplating a £1m move for Dutch winger Kevin Bobson when the transfer window opens in January.
Even though McClaren has insisted his transfer war chest is empty after he spent more than £20m in the summer, he is keen to sign Bobson from NAC Breda.
Boro have twice sent scouts over to Holland to watch Bobson, including the 2-2 draw between NAC and Ajax on September 29 - when their target scored after just three minutes.
Middlesbrough are interested in bringing a left-sided midfielder to the club after Allan Johnston failed to live up to expectations.
Bobson's contract will expire at the end of next season but NAC, who signed him from Ajax last year, are looking to sell players to alleviate their financial problems.
The 21-year-old's agent, Franklin Sedoc, said: "Middlesbrough have watched Kevin a couple of times and they will watch him again in the future.
"The transfer market opens in January and they might take it further then."
Bobson added: "It's too early to jump in the air in celebration but it's always good when there's serious interest in me.
"I always like it when such a big English club want to have me."
