POLICE are trying to trace a youth who risked the lives of motorists by throwing a metal grill at an oncoming car on a dual carriageway.
The 2ft grill went through the windscreen of Volkswagen Golf car travelling east in Askew Road, Gateshead.
It caused the female driver to stop in a state of shock and an oncoming vehicle drove into the back of her car.
Police have only scant information as to the identity of the youth, although he was wearing a blue baseball cap.
He was seen to make off in a white car heading south from the scene, following the incident, at 3.10pm on Saturday.
Police would like to speak to a man who approached the victim after the incident. He did not leave details of his identity.
Witnesses are asked to contact Gateshead West CID, on 0191-454 7555, extension 64547.
