IN the tightest finish of the show season in Weardale Mick Emerson emerged as winner of the annual leek show at Rookhope Workingmen's Club at the weekend.
Mick, from Stanhope, showed a pair of leeks measuring 196.3 cubic inches to beat off the challenge of Jimmy Readman, from Westgate, with 189.4 cubic inches. Both men have already been winners at Weardale shows this year - Mick at Stanhope and Jimmy at the Blue Bell, St John's Chapel.
In third place at Rookhope was David Thompson, of Stanhope, with 149.4 cubic inches.
Results at the Cowshill show, also held at the weekend, were as follows: Members class and best leek in show - 1 T Snaith, 167.83 cu ins; 2 J Peart, 159.96 cu ins; 3 S Eggleston, 136.47 cu ins. Best vegetables, Eddie Heppell; best flowers, Brian Robinson; best baker, Jenny Giles.
