Bishop Auckland manager Brian Honour was heartened by his side's display even though they lost 1-0 at Witton Albion on Saturday in the UniBond League.
Honour included seven new players in the line up and he said: "It was a massive improvement on my first couple of games in charge.
"With a little bit of luck, we could have got something out of the game. The new signings will take time to gel, but our all round play was better."
Bishops had what seemed to be a good goal by Andrew Shingleton ruled out early in the game, and they fell behind when Simon Burton scored.
They had their chances to equalise in the second half, with paul Moss and Shaun Hope both going close.
Bishops are at home to Kendal on Wednesday night, when Honour might have two more new signings.
Whitby Town are now third in the table, their highest ever placing, after they thrashed Frickley 7-1 away from home.
They trailed early in the game, but then Aaron Wilford led a goals romp, scoring a hat trick. Craig Veart, Stefan Zoll, Craig Skelton and Lee Ure scored the other goals.
Troubled Gateshead gained a morale boost when they beat Burscough 1-0 at home, David Goodchild scoring late on.
