THE future town crier of Chester-le-Street is to be picked with the help of the townspeople.
Chester-le-Street District Council and the town's traders' association sent out an appeal for someone with a "thunderous yet articulate voice" who must also be "an approachable character, civic-minded, reliable and dignified".
After whittling the candidates down to seven, the organisers are now giving the finalists a live audition. On Saturday, October 26, each will go before a crowd of local residents, whose reaction will be used to pick the area's first town crier in living memory.
