A FAMILY are appealing for the return of a horse-drawn carriage taken by thieves at the weekend.
The carriage was built about six years ago by Mark Bielby for his sister, Andrea, who takes part in carriage-driving competitions.
On Sunday evening it was securely locked and covered with a tarpaulin in a field on the A174 Saltburn Road, in Brotton.
But when Andrea's mother, Shirley, of Hutchinson Street, Brotton, visited the field yesterday she found the carriage was gone.
"It's very heavy and can carry four people so it's not the sort of thing you can just pick up and walk away with," she said.
"We think someone must have seen it being loaded on to a trailer and would urge them to tell the police as soon as possible."
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on (01642) 326326.
