A SCHEME pioneered in the Richmondshire and Hambleton districts is to be extended to help more people in remote areas of the county find work.
The Wheels 2 Work scheme already supplies mopeds to those who would otherwise struggle to reach a job or college as buses are in such short supply and there is no other viable alternative.
The machines come with all the necessary clothing and are available for up to six months to anyone over 16 who holds a provisional licence.
However, the project is to be expanded to include Pedal 2 Work, which will be offering mountain bikes on loan.
Co-ordinator Andrew Johnston said: "The scheme is an excellent way of getting around for people who have shorter distances to travel.
"Those living on the peripheries of towns and those wishing to gain access to the industrial estates on the outskirts of our market towns will be eligible to apply for a bike.''
The project is open to anyone from Hambleton and Richmondshire. At present, there are 12 bikes available for loan for up to a year.
The Northern Voluntary Services Association manages both projects with Pedal 2 Work funded with cash from Global Grants and the North Yorkshire County Council Travelwise budget.
