A FLASHING unit which displays the speed of an approaching car could be a permanent feature in Darlington.
The Speedvisor, used in West Auckland Road, Fitzwilliam Drive and Thompson Street, has been hailed as successful in reducing the overall speed of traffic.
Now 14 sites throughout the borough have been chosen to install the two Speedvisor units for two-week periods during the next 12 months.
If these are successful the council will consider adding more on major radial routes where the units would become a permanent feature.
The sites, chosen by police because of known speeding problems, will compliment existing speed camera enforcement programmes.
Mike Baxter, a Darlington council highways engineer, told members at Monday's Transport Forum that the system was working well.
He said: "The programme started in West Auckland Road, then Thompson Street, then Fitzwilliam Drive and it has reduced overall speeds.
"Now the two units in conjunction with the police will target 14 sites twice during the year. Police traffic patrols will accompany them on random occasions to get some degree of enforcement."
